Woh subah hi kya, jiski shuruwaat tumse naa ho,

Woh raat hi kya, jismein tumhara khwaab naa ho;

Woh khayal hi kya, jismein tumhaari yaad naa ho,

Woh khat hi kya, jismein tumhaari khabar naa ho;

Woh sach hi kya, jiske saamne jooth ki haar naa ho,

Woh kavi hi kya, jiske panne syaahi se bharey naa ho;

Woh dil hi kya, jise pyaar ka ehsaas naa ho,

Woh zindagi hi kya, jise pyaar ki pehchaan naa ho;

Woh mohabbat hi kya, jismein dilbar ki fikar naa ho,

Woh ranjha hi kya, jise apne heer ki talaash naa ho!

– Advaita Inamdar

Translated into English :

How could it be a morning, which doesn’t begin with you,

How could it be a night, in which there isn’t a dream of you;

How could it be a thought, which contains no memory of you,

How could it be a letter, which contains no news of you;

How could it be truth, which can’t defeat the lies,

How could one be a poet, whose pages aren’t filled with ink;

How could it be a heart, which doesn’t feel love,

How could it be a life, which can’t recognize love;

How could it be love, which doesn’t care for the beloved,

How could one be Romeo, who doesn’t search for his Juliet !

*Edit* :

I am truly honoured and pleased by the response to this poem by my new friend, fellow poet and blogger Nandita Manan who wrote “Woh Dil hi Kya” as her poetic response. To read the lovely poem click here.

Even if one reads about love, that alone could at times inspire one to write poetry about love and life. I am going to share my favourite quote and poem, both always brings a smile to my face, fill my heart with that warm feeling and give me hope about love! 🙂

I love you because the entire universe conspired to help me find you.

Paulo Coelho

I believe, amongst other things that The Alchemist changed my view on love too. From thinking that the thrill was all in the chase, to believing that we meet the right person and fall in love at the right time, in the right place. Because the universe always has a plan, one that we may not know of; but are very much a part of. So rather than searching for love, why not let it find you instead ? So, my dear beloved, if you’re reading this; you know where to find me !   😉   😛

I don’t love you as if you were a rose of salt, topaz,

or arrow of carnations that propagate fire:

I love you as one loves certain obscure things,

secretly, between the shadow and the soul.

I love you as the plant that doesn’t bloom but carries

the light of those flowers, hidden, within itself,

and thanks to your love the tight aroma that arose

from the earth lives dimly in my body.

I love you without knowing how, or when, or from where,

I love you directly without problems or pride:

I love you like this because I don’t know any other way to love,

except in this form in which I am not nor are you,

so close that your hand upon my chest is mine,

so close that your eyes close with my dreams.

Pablo Neruda

The last few lines from this poem by Pablo Neruda, that is how I would like to define true love. That is what love should be ! What do you think ? Please share your thoughts, I would certainly love to hear them.

Cheers, Advaita 🙂
